Pictures of People Smoking
In the not so distant past, cigarette ads looked like this one. Physicians recommended smoking cigarettes for a variety of reasons. Many physicians would recommend a particular brand to their patients.
Today there is a war on cigarettes that equals or in some cases surpasses the war on drugs. What a difference a few years makes in the advertising industry.
In the early days of movies and television, practically everyone smoked and the industry made it look very appealing, even glamorous to some people. Today, these movies are blamed for so many people picking up the habit.
Early cigarette ads were quite clever. In this one, even the dog enjoys a relaxing smoke while the kid teaches him a new trick (blowing smoke rings).
Who can argue that Bogey was the coolest detective around? He always smoked and just looked cool doing it.
Today's celebrities still smoke, but they tend to do it under wraps. Leonardo DiCaprio must have some pretty good lungs to ride the bike and smoke at the same time. Man after my own heart, smoking during exercise activities.
Even our current President Barrack Obama was a smoker. I'm still trying to decide if he quit for personal reasons or just to appease the masses during the election. With the new cigarette taxes that went into affect in the beginning of 2009, it would seem the now former smoker has joined the ranks of the anti-smoking radicals of the country.
Europe used to be the smokers safe haven. Is this picture of the little old man smoking in front of the anarchy graffiti a sign of changing times in the old country as well?
Less developed countries have apparently not jumped on the bandwagon yet. Or maybe this kid just saw too many Joe Cool ads and couldn't resist the brainwashing urge to smoke.
Smoking for some is a cultural element. You think he could claim religious immunity when the powers that be finally make cigarettes illegal?
Ok, is this guy trying to win a bet or does he REALLY enjoy smoking? At today's prices that is one seriously costly smoke!
Note the older lady seems to be enjoying her stogey. She has a certain sense of style and seems to be settled in for an afternoon of people watching.
As with most controversial topics in the US today, there are people on both sides of the smoking battle. For many opponents of smoking, they truly feel cigarette smoke is going to kill everyone on the planet. I've even recently heard the term "third-hand smoke", which is apparently when someone is forced to walk through a cloud of smoke outdoors. So, I'm assuming we'll soon be hearing that smoking is banned anywhere without a ceiling. On the other side of the debate, smokers are more and more outraged by their diminishing rights, high taxes, and vilification for using a perfectly legal product. Yes, we know it might kill us eventually, but hey, something is going to. If I stop smoking am I giving in to the radicals trying to run my life through government? Or should I just give in and admit the researchers are right and smoking is going to kill me and all the ones I love? I've always been a bit of a rebel, so I think I'll keep smoking until they finally make it illegal. But maybe by then the marijuana advocates will have made that legal. One can hope. ARE YOU SERIOUS??? I was asked to update this website, and I was truly disgusted and offended by both what I saw and the commentary I read by the writer. Why do smokers continue to have the attitude that something has to kill me, so I don't really care? Why do people make light of the fact that smoking can and will kill you? I used to work at a restaurant at a time when there was a smoking section, and I had someone tell me that they wanted to sit in the cancer section as if it was funny. Well, I have experienced cancer in my family and it is no laughing matter. Why would you choose that for yourself? Smoking is a choice. Today you have no excuse for beginning to smoke. It is not glamorous, it is not cool, and it is disgusting. You know the risks of it. Here are the facts.
1. Smoking related diseases claim an estimated 438,000 American lives each year. 2. Smoking costs the United States $193 billion in 2004, which includes $96 billion in direct health care expenditures. (And people wonder why nonsmokers care about this?) 3. Cigarette smoke contains over 4,800 chemicals, and 69 of these have been proven to cause cancer. 4. Approximately 8.6 million people in the U.S. alone have at least one serious illness caused by smoking. 5. Smoking in pregnancy accounts for 10 percent of all infant deaths. 6. Smoking by parents harms children. It leads to exacerbation of asthma, an increased number of colds and ear infections, and causes sudden infant death syndrome. Exposure to secondhand smoke causes more than 202,000 asthma episodes, 790,000 physicial visits for ear infections, and 430 SIDS cases each year.
I have only touched the tip of the iceberg with these facts. Please do not smoke, and if you do, PLEASE DO NOT SMOKE AROUND YOUR CHILDREN. If you love them, don't harm them with secondhand smoke.
Please weigh in on this topic. Let us know how you feel. Are you pro-smoking and for the rights of smokers or are you against smoking? Please add your comments to the comments box at the bottom. I look forward to learning what you think.
Add Your Comments about Pictures of People Smoking: Name: Jacqueline Date: Wednesday, Mar 02 2011 I think by now we have established that smoking kills, is disgusting and that there really isn't any good reason to start doing it.... so why do people still do it? Is it peer pressure? Is it curiosity? Is it a stage of rebellion that most youngsters go through? is it that when one is young, they feel invincible and determined to prove that smoking won't affect them? Or do they just like putting their life on the line, like some weird way to get a thrill (like sky-diving)? Wherever there's a problem, one must first address the root causes, which I believe many are working to find out and improve. Simply stating how disgusting, sick, wrong, and stupid it is won't change the reality that people still do it. However, I must say that those of you who are thinking of trying it for aforementioned reasons, or others, please post here and give others an insight as to why you would consider such a thing. Also, please don't do it. It might seem ok now, but I guarantee that if you start, you WILL come to regret it someday and someday may seem far away now, but that day will come and when it does, you'll realize it came all too quickly. You people are really harsh and judgmental and don't seem to see the big picture. 80% of adult smokers started before 18. When they were in school around alot of peer presure. Once they got older, they were additicted and quiting is extreemly hard. I'm sure none of you are addicted to ANYTHING at all, like caffeine, chocolate, chips, video games. Do I think smoking is a good thing, HELL no. I wish they would make it illegal. But as a person who fell into the peer pressure, I can tell you that it is not as simple as someone waking up one day and saying "MMM, I think I want to get addicted to something that will kill me today, how 'bout smoking." Quit being so ignorant. You can't tell me that you've NEVER done anything from peer pressure. I can personally say that quitting is the hardest thing I've ever done, and I am attempting for the 4th time. my dad has been smioking for years now and it sickens me to death everytime he lights as cigarette or a blunt up. yeah smoking anything can kill you. you might not no right now but yeah eventually your grave is wear you will lay.i even lost my foster grandma to cancer caused by her smoking constantly. she used to always tell me that she would come to my wedding and what not now she's dead. she told not to ever smoke because it will ruin my life. i said grandma why r u still smoking then, she said because her life was all ready gone and it did no use to stop sense her life was already gone. Now im married and have one child and i always teach her that smoking is very bad for her. my husband used to smoke but he had a big scare at the docters office. they told him that he might have cancer in the near by future and that immediatley stop him. he wanted to be able to attend his daughters wedding or graduation. thats how fully dedicated to not smoking anymore. i myself have never smoked a day in my life and don't plan on smiking. Smoking is a waste of time and most definitely money
